Pop rock workshop

Pop rock workshop February 16th 2019

Nearly forty singers from Manchester Community Choir, Open Voice, Golden Voices, Knot Another Choir, plus a dedicated couple who had travelled all the way from Knaresborough gathered at Cross Street Chapel on a fine sunny February morning for an inspiring and brilliant workshop led by Wendy Sergeant and Catherine Smith. Wendy and Catherine come from Portishead/Bristol where they run the Vibe Pop/Rock choir.

They got us all moving with a good warm-up which included a few moves from pilates, a few lines and moves from well known Pop Rock songs, then with a sing-through of Love Train which we sang while moving around the space in and out of all four parts. A good exercise in listening.

Then it was down to the serious business of learning “Since you’ve been gone” by Rainbow and “Fields of gold” by Sting. Except both teachers kept the mood relaxed, entertaining, energising and humorous. Wendy and Catherine moved between the two songs, teaching two parts each so that we quickly became proficient in both by the end of the day, able to build on what we’d already learned as the day went on.

The fine warm sunny weather meant we all had the chance to enjoy Manchester on a busy Saturday at lunchtime, while Janet the manager at Cross Street Chapel looked after us really well, keeping us refreshed with tea and coffee in the breaks.

The finale of performing both songs all the way through was brilliant and gave us all a real sense of achievement. As one participant said in the feedback, “Great day – have really enjoyed it & amazed at the lovely sound we’ve produced”.
